Gentle on My Mind (1967 Glen Campbell album). The centerpiece of the album is "Gentle on My Mind". Campbell heard songwriter John Hartford's original version on the radio and fell in love with this song about memories of a lost love

Lyrics to "Gentle On My Mind" song by Glen Campbell: It's knowing that your door is always open And your path is free to walk That makes me tend to leave. That keeps you in the backroads By the rivers of my memory That keeps you ever gentle on my mind. It's not clinging to the rocks and ivy Planted on their columns now that bind me Or something that somebody said Because they thought we fit together walking It's just knowing that the world will not be cursing Or forgiving when I walk along some railroad track and find. That you're moving on the backroads By the rivers of my memory And for hours you're just gentle on my mind.

Gentle On My Mind by John Hartford appears on the 1968 Glen Campbell album of the same name. This song won four Grammy awards for Campbell and Hartford. Inspiration for the song, according to Hartford, came from the film, Doctor Zhivago. It’s a love song from the free-love 60s, and like the movie that inspired it, the song presents the many sides of the idea, if you love him, set him free. This song is included in the Country Genius – Male and Female Perspectives on Love and Sex. "Gentle On My Mind" Track Info. Written By John Hartford. Release Date August 1, 1967

This is Campbell's folksiest album, albeit with string orchestra accompaniment, as he covers "Bowling Green," "Mary in the Morning," and the title tune, and you get to hear him do a solo guitar and voice number, his own "Just Another Ma. Even the most overproduced stuff here, "You're My World" and Rod McKuen's "The World I Used to Know," come off well, and Campbell is in excellent voice throughout, most especially on a wonderfully restrained and beautiful rendition of Roy Orbison's "Crying

Glen Campbell's version of this song was the first major hit for John Hartford, who - up to that point - had enjoyed only moderate success as a singer and songwriter. Campbell used this song as the theme to his TV variety show The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour which ran 1969-1972.
