The Wackers were an American Elektra Records group formed in 1970 out of another Elektra band Roxy. Singer/songwriter Bob Segarini and t Randy Bishop disbanded Roxy and joined with boardist Michael Stull to form the new group. Bassist Bill 'Kootch' Trochim and drummer Spencer Earnshaw completed The Wackers lineup to record the debut album Wackering Heights, produced by Gary Usher.

Album · 1970 · 12 Songs. The Wackers' 1971 debut album, Wackering Heights, was produced by Gary Usher, which is why many of these songs sound like branches from The Byrds’ family tree. Check out the flawless three-part folk-rock harmonies in Body Go Round and the summery opener Travelin’ Time (plus the Chris Bell–sounding backing vocals in the second verse).

Though the Los Angeles-based Wackers had founded their career on an appealing Beatles-based prototype power pop, their second album finds them reaching farther afield, adding CSNY-style harmonies to their sonic palette in "Do You Know the Reason" and "Time Will Carry O. In addition, there are post-psychedelic outings on both the title track and the album's three-song finale, climaxing in the mantra-like "Time Will Carry O. But despite their frequent experimentation, the Wackers sound most confident on the "Dear "We Can.

The Wackers are another example that the air or water in Canada grows great musicians. Unfortunately it proves the rule that more good music dies unknown than bad music gets attention. Although the mix is a little muddy compared to the best, my guess is that the studio was using the typically crappy transistorized amps which had to be toned down because when recorded accurately, they sounded like fingernails on a blackboard. From my perspective, the arrangements on Hot Wacks are inspired. They are just one of many very creative and more than competent bands that fail to achieve mainstream success in spite of their talent. I bought Hot Wacks on vinyl in 1972 when records were cheap enough that you could afford to take a chance on a band if the jacket looked interesting. It was the second album released by this virtually unknown band.
