VALERY KULESHOV The Russian silver medalist has served as artist-in-residence at the University of Central Oklahoma’s College of Fine Arts and Design since 1998. CHRISTOPHER TAYLOR The American bronze medalist has earned a reputation for his advocacy of music from the past 100 years-Messiaen, Ligeti, and Bolcom-and for his performances of Bach’s Goldberg Variations on a double-manual Steinway. He has actively promoted the rediscovery and refurbishment of that instrument, and over the past five years has also been building a modernized version of it.
The Van Cliburn International Piano Competition is an American piano competition, first held in 1962 in Fort Worth, Texas and hosted by the Van Cliburn Foundation. Initially held at Texas Christian University, the competition has been held at the Bass Performance Hall since 2001. The competition is named in honour of Van Cliburn, who won the first International Tchaikovsky Competition, in 1958.

The Van Cliburn Competition is held once every four years, in the year following the United States presidential elections.
Italian pianist Simone Pedroni won the competition, while Valery Kuleshov and Christopher Taylor were awarded the Silver and Bronze medals. Morton Gould composed his Ghost Waltzes for the competition. John Giordano (chairman).
