Darius Milhaud was probably -among the reminded group of the six- the most intrepid, audacious and kaleidoscopic of the group. He found motives for inspiration into the Greek literature, surrealistic images and historical facts (In fact he wrote an Opera about Simon Bolivar). As indomitable traveler he was, his fascination for Brazil captured him instantaneously. For none of us is a secret the enraptured devotion professed by Darius Milhaud around the Brazilian dance rhythms. His saudades composed when Milhaud was working at the Consulate with Claudel in the early twenties. The three rags were composed for his admired friend Jean Werner according William Bolcom (his pupil) Milhaud never knew about Scott Joplin's piano rags, so when Bolcom introduced them the composer found them hopelessly old -fashioned. Fascinating and charming album. 4 people found this helpful.

He was a member of Les Six-also known as the Groupe des Six-and one of the most prolific composers of the twentieth century. His compositions are particularly noted as being influenced by jazz and for their use of polytonality (music in more than one key at once). As Milhaud used bitonality or tritonality in his compositions, listeners could distinguish the different use of keys because of the contrast between the tone color, rhythm and register.
